Nonprofit Leaders Explore Funding Challenges, AI Innovation, and the Power of Collaboration

By Jamie Glavic, Marketing Director, Gilman Partners

Gilman Partners hosted a roundtable discussion with nonprofit leaders from across the region to share their insights on the current funding landscape and how their organizations are “bridging the gap” amid growing uncertainty. Below are some of the highlights from the conversation:

Navigating Funding Uncertainty
Nonprofit leaders agreed that federal budget changes are creating anxiety among donors and clients. Many organizations are using this moment to reevaluate how they can reduce their reliance on government funding and build stronger private donor bases. Leaders emphasized the importance of communicating proactively with clients, donors, and partners. They also noted the critical role of storytelling, in the face of alarming headlines, ensuring that communities remain confident in the vital services they provide.

Operational Shifts and Financial Strategy
Operational shifts are underway, with nonprofits streamlining services, balancing financial and human resource needs, and exploring ways to work more efficiently. Echoing lessons learned during the pandemic, many stressed the need for calm leadership and thoughtful planning during uncertain times. Several noted that balancing financial sustainability with caring for their people has been a top priority.

AI Integration and Innovation
Many nonprofits represented at the roundtable are exploring practical applications of AI to increase productivity and extend limited resources. Leaders discussed how AI can amplify staff productivity, help bridge resource gaps, and free up time for mission-critical work. Examples included using AI for fundraising prospect research, grant writing, marketing content creation, and HR support. While AI can significantly boost efficiency, leaders stressed it’s important to maintain the human connection at the heart of their missions. Some organizations are even developing AI-driven virtual teams to support core operations.

Sector-Wide Collaboration and Support
Participants spoke about the broader trends impacting the nonprofit sector, including the need for stronger collaboration and resource sharing. Several leaders highlighted the importance of thinking beyond individual organizations and working collectively to ensure the strength of the region’s nonprofit community. There was a clear consensus that strategic partnerships, shared storytelling efforts, and creative funding strategies will be vital moving forward.

Looking Toward the Future
Despite the challenges, nonprofit leaders expressed optimism about the future. Many see opportunities to innovate, deepen community connections, and build more resilient organizations. Investing in relationships, adapting thoughtfully to new technologies, and maintaining a strong focus on mission were recurring themes that left participants hopeful about what lies ahead.
