Job Summary

The Vice President, Development is responsible for the organization, implementation and achievement of annual fundraising and ongoing financial sustainability goals. Responsible for developing relationships and executing strategies that result in new gifts/support income, managing activities related to the analysis, planning, execution, control, and evaluation of fundraising efforts. Work closely with staff and Board members to initiate, identify and facilitate solicitations of donors. Deal effectively with patrons and donors of the Cincinnati Arts Association (CAA). This is a senior level executive role that works closely with the President and the Board of Trustees to support and further the mission and strategic objectives of CAA.

Job Description

ORGANIZATION OVERVIEW: The Cincinnati Arts Association (CAA) is a not-for-profit organization that oversees the programming and management of two of the Tri-state’s finest performing arts venues – the Aronoff Center for the Arts and Music Hall – and is dedicated to supporting performing and visual arts. Each year, CAA presents a diverse schedule of events; serves upwards of 600,000 people in its venues; features the work of talented local, regional, and national artists in its Weston Art Gallery; and supports the work of more than one dozen resident companies. Since the inception of its acclaimed arts education programs, CAA has reached more than 1.7 million students. 

POSITION SUMMARY: The Vice President, Development is responsible for the organization, implementation and achievement of annual fundraising and ongoing financial sustainability goals. Responsible for developing relationships and executing strategies that result in new gifts/support income, managing activities related to the analysis, planning, execution, control, and evaluation of fundraising efforts. Work closely with staff and Board members to initiate, identify and facilitate solicitations of donors. Deal effectively with patrons and donors of CAA. This is a senior level executive role that works closely with the President and the Board of Trustees to support and further the mission and strategic objectives of CAA.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. This is not an exhaustive list of all duties and responsibilities. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Work closely with Board, Senior Staff management team and any subcommittees to solicit annual and event sponsorships, capital campaign gifts, increase membership revenue; motivate and empower volunteer leadership to produce high-end results
  • Identify, research and cultivate prospective donors, and aggressively seek new funding sources, as well as  ‘in-kind’ donations
  • Maintain relationships with current and (cultivate) past donors, organizations and foundations
  • Plan and implement a variety of fundraising strategies
  • Work in tandem with grants manager on preparation and submission of grants and related materials, and follow-through with final grant report submission
  • Prepare detailed plans of action for all approved fundraising programs, including budgets that support their implementation; prepare development department budget in conjunction with the President and Vice President-Finance; track annual budget and expenditures
  • Attend Board of Trustees meetings to report Development’s financial position  
  • Research or initiate research and data compilation on potential individuals, corporate and foundation donors identified by board members, staff and volunteers by virtue of their gift history to similar organizations or activities
  • Remain apprised on current fundraising and public relations programs, practices, and procedures being used in the nonprofit sector
  • Coordinate development of all fundraising materials, website and digital exposure for fundraising efforts
  • Prepare or initiate preparation of all content and materials needed for approved fundraising and public relations programs, including proposals to donors and donor prospects, gift recognition and acknowledgment materials, appeal letters, advertising and other related materials
  • Oversee appropriate record-keeping systems for tracking donor participation, identification and cultivation of prospects
  • In conjunction with Development Team, create appropriate record-keeping systems for tracking all incoming gifts
  • Design and implement donor recognition programs; plan and execute all aspects of sponsorship programs
  • Oversee any additional campaigns developed for CAA and the Weston Art Gallery
  • Preparation of annual development calendar and budget
  • Hire, train and supervise development staff

REQUIRED EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in a related field or equivalent, and a minimum of ten years of related and successful experience; or equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skill and abilities.
  • Knowledgeable in the area of annual giving, foundation/corporate solicitations, special events, deferred giving, grant writing, communications, and capital campaigns
  • Knowledge of fundraising/marketing strategies and techniques
  • Knowledge of the arts community
  • Proven track record of success in major donor identification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship
  • Experience with prospect research as well as research on funding sources and trends
  • Demonstrated ability to be fiscally responsible
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as a member of a cohesive team
  • Ability to lead and think strategically
  • Ability to meet people with ease and interact equitably with staff, Board and volunteers throughout the organization, and be comfortable with all forms of outreach
  • Ability to deal with a range of styles and behaviors in a tactful manner
  • Ability to establish priorities, manage multiple tasks concurrently, work independently, and follow through with objectives
  • Ability to work under pressure while managing priorities and deadlines
  • Excellent organizational skills with attention to detail
  • Proven leadership experience to supervise, motivate and mentor staff
  • Strong communication skills, both oral and written; interpersonal and customer-service skills
  • Basic knowledge of Microsoft Outlook, Word and Excel
  • Ability to work flexible schedule, including nights and weekends as needed
  • Transportation required in order to commute for meetings outside the organization as needed
