Job Summary

The goal of the Renew Collaborative is to provide short-term intensive non-payment eviction prevention case management to at-risk tenants while also demonstrating to property owners that tenancy preservation is more cost-effective than executing evictions.

Job Description

The Renew Collaborative is a proven eviction prevention strategy that is being replicated as a pilot project in Cincinnati. The Renew Collaborative was developed by HomeStart, a non-profit organization based in Greater Boston, and has been implemented in three regions of Massachusetts. The goal of the Renew Collaborative is to provide short-term intensive non-payment eviction prevention case management to at-risk tenants while also demonstrating to property owners that tenancy preservation is more cost-effective than executing evictions.

The Renew Collaborative Program Coordinator will be a member of the Community Connections division as an Associate team member at the United Way of Greater Cincinnati and will receive support and training from HomeStart.

The Renew Collaborative Program Coordinator role is primarily a client-facing direct service case management position. It is equally important that the person in this role can support the implementation and growth of this new project in Cincinnati, which will require extensive relationship building and community outreach.

Key Areas of Responsibility: 

Client Case Management – Goals

  • Assist clients who are facing eviction to preserve their tenancies by working with them to develop an Individualized Service Plan (ISP) and advocating on their behalf.
  • Maintain a point-in-time caseload of up to 8-10 active clients, with the goal of preventing at least 45 client evictions in the first year.
  • Provide 12 months of stabilization support to each household served.

Client Case Management – Responsibilities

  • Communicate and mediate with property managers, attorneys, and others to facilitate housing retention.
  • Assist clients with completing applications for rental assistance.
  • Accompany clients to housing court hearings either remotely or in person as needed.
  • Link clients with outside resources and mainstream benefits for ongoing stabilization support.
  • Assist clients with budgeting and money management.
  • Assign tasks to clients as appropriate, with the aim of strengthening self-sufficiency. Monitor progress and provide needed support.
  • Complete required data entry in a timely fashion and maintain client files as proscribed and case notes that log all necessary client information.

Program Development – Goals

  • Effectively implement the Renew Collaborative Pilot Project by providing intensive tenant case management services that leverage the expertise and capacity of existing stakeholder organizations.
  • In collaboration with the Sr. Manager, develop and support strategic relationships with the intent of ensuring long-term program sustainability.

Program Development – Responsibilities

  • Cultivate and/or maintain a strong knowledge of local area resources and stakeholder organizations.
  • Foster and maintain close working relationships with key stakeholders including public housing authority, legal aid, district court, and community-based social service organization staff.
  • Participate in regular partnership meetings with HomeStart; identify and problem-solve program challenges and opportunities.
  • In collaboration with the Sr. Manager, provide on-the-ground support with program development and evaluation efforts, such as obtaining data from the public housing authority on costs associated with executing eviction.
  • In collaboration with the Sr. Manager, provide in-person outreach, training, and presentation on the program model to ensure a steady pipeline of tenant referrals. 

Minimum Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field or equivalent experience.
  • Two years of experience providing case management and/or housing stabilization to homeless, at-risk, or otherwise vulnerable populations; working knowledge of landlord-tenant issues preferred.
  • Excellent oral and written communication and presentation skills.
  • Strong relationship building skills.
  • Strong project management & time management skills.
  • Adaptability and agility in balancing multiple and shifting activities and priorities.

Skills Required for Associate:

  • Interest and inclination for a position that requires both client-facing case management and community-facing outreach.
  • Patient, respectful demeanor toward people in crisis; dedication to helping vulnerable individuals stabilize their housing and increase their self-sufficiency.
  • A spirited attitude to take risks, develop new systems and relationships, and refine strategies and approaches.
  • Ability to work with and set appropriate boundaries with clients who are from diverse backgrounds and who are facing multiple barriers to stability, such as mental health crises, substance abuse issues, and experiences of domestic violence.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Comfort and familiarity with regularly entering client-level data into an electronic database system.
  • Ability to both work independently and proactively seek out professional support as needed.

Salary starting at $40,000 plus competitive benefits package
