Director of Human Resources

Cincinnati Opera seeks an extraordinary human-resources professional to ensure a positive work experience for a diverse group of employees: a year-round staff of 27 and an additional 150 singers and theatrical professionals who participate in the company’s annual summer festival.

The Director owns recruitment, onboarding, employee benefits, paid time off (PTO) management, payroll processing, and the communication of employee policies and procedures. The ideal candidate for this position is a good listener, a clear communicator, an excellent record-keeper, a problem-solver, and a trusted colleague. Reporting to the CEO, the Director is a key member of the senior leadership team.

Responsibilities

  • Provide expert counsel to the leadership team on recruitment, compensation, performance management, employee relations, training, professional development, and team culture.
  • Develop, update, and maintain HR policies, procedures, and technology.
  • Cultivate and promote an inclusive, respectful, compassionate, and productive work environment.
  • Manage searches for open positions from position postings to hires.
  • Manage the onboarding process for new hires and the exit process for departing employees.
  • Maintain HRIS information in Paycor and provide regular reports to stakeholders
  • Manage record-keeping associated with, recruitment, benefits, PTO, employee demographics, and personnel files.
  • Maintain updated job descriptions for all employees and an organizational chart.
  • Maintain and distribute the employee handbook, updating policies as needed
  • Administer employee benefits programs ranging from healthcare to parking.
  • Partner with people leaders on employee relations matters and conduct investigations, as necessary.
  • Ensure a safe work environment through knowledge and communication of safety policies and procedures. Examples include communicating weather emergency procedures, management of COVID protocol policy, supervision of a seasonal COVID Officer, and CPR training.
  • Assist in the preparation of payroll via Paycor
  • Manage unemployment claims, employment verifications, and all items related to workers compensation with insurance broker.
  • Consult and liaise with legal counsel and other advisors as needed.
  • Develop and disseminate internal communications, ranging from parking updates to celebrations of employee anniversaries, to news about facility maintenance.
  • Develop and deliver training to employees and people leaders on HR-related topics; coordinate trainings with external vendors as needed.
  • Manage schedule and agendas for staff meetings.
  • Assist with teambuilding activities, educational opportunities, and training events.
  • Liaise with facility manager for upkeep of workspace.
  • Manage keycards, keys, and name badges.
  • Provide occasional backup for office management functions such as mail distribution.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university
  • Seven or more years in human resources management
  • An optimistic and solution-oriented temperament
  • Excellent verbal, written, and listening skills
  • Exceptional attention to detail
  • Ability to work evenings and weekends, especially during the company’s summer season

Preferred Qualifications

  • Arts sector experience
  • Experience with a seasonal employer
  • Experience in employee training
  • Experience in management complex payrolls; Paycor experience is a plus.

Compensation

This is a full-time, exempt position with a salary range from $75,000-85,000, commensurate with experience. Cincinnati Opera offers an extensive benefits package including health, dental, vision, life, and long-term disability insurance; paid time off; parking; and 403(b) with a portion matched by the company.
