Xavier University seeks a Director for the Eigel Center for Community-Engaged Learning. The Eigel Center supports collaborative community-based learning experiences that prepare graduates for a world that is increasingly diverse, complex, and interdependent. Leveraging engaged faculty and community assets, the Center guides the development and integration of meaningful immersive and service-learning courses that bridge classrooms to communities and provide a mutually beneficial exchange of knowledge and resources. Annually, the Eigel Center works with Programs and Academic Departments to design and support curriculum that integrates community-engaged learning into faculty teaching and research and acts as a primary resource in advancing and coordinating institutional resources that support community-engaged learning for all students, faculty, and staff. 

The Director is responsible for coordinating faculty and student engagement and external outreach efforts that support Xavier’s Jesuit Mission. The Director and his or her staff work closely with faculty, students, University Administrators, and external partners to create engagement opportunities that promote and enhance academic teaching and research, student development, and institutional citizenship. The Director serves as scholarship director and advisor for Xavier’s Community Engaged Fellows Service Scholarship Program.  Recipients of the scholarship are required to perform ten hours of service each week during the course of their college careers while serving as role models for other students and promoting Jesuit ideals on campus.  The position reports to the Associate Provost for Academic Affairs and works closely with individual academic programs, Centers/Offices, and Colleges to ensure that engagement efforts reinforce and are aligned with the University’s Catholic Jesuit Values, Strategic Planning, and diversity and inclusion objectives. 

Key Responsibilities include:

  • Act as chief administrator and director for the Eigel Center, and as Scholarship Director of the Community Engaged Fellows.
  • Build and foster external partnerships that extend Xavier’s academic footprint into the community.
  • Collaborate with programs and academic departments to support and coordinate initiatives that integrate community-engaged learning into faculty teaching, research, and internship/vocational opportunities.
  • Promote and support community-engaged learning in all areas of Xavier’s academic endeavors.
  • Organize and coordinate the annual Academy for Community-Engaged Faculty and Community Engaged Scholar’s Summer Research Program.
  • Advise students who lead community-centered co-curricular clubs and programs.
  • Support the annual institutional assessment of community-engaged learning.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree required, Master’s degree preferred; demonstrated experience working professionally with nonprofits, neighborhoods, and civic partners; an established record of organizing and teaching service learning or community-engaged courses in any academic field, and 3-5 years of administrative and managerial experience in a professional office.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and efficiently in person and through written and electronic correspondence.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Experience working independently on multiple projects.
  • Experience dealing with challenges that require creative problem-solving, persistence, and partnership.
  • Experience engaging diverse communities.
