Job Summary

As an integral member of the Office of Development and Division of University Advancement, the Assistant Vice President of Development for Gift Planning will work closely with the Senior Associate Vice President of Development, Central Programs to provide vision, leadership and creativity in expanding a comprehensive and successful charitable gift and estate planning program. The individual will assist in planning, organizing, and implementing strategies to increase the level of personal involvement and financial commitment of donors and prospects of Miami University. In addition, this position will have a set of metrics corresponding to strategies seeking philanthropic and volunteer support of alumni and friends of Miami.

Job Description

As an integral member of the Office of Development and Division of University Advancement, the Assistant Vice President of Development for Gift Planning will work closely with the Senior Associate Vice President of Development, Central Programs to provide vision, leadership and creativity in expanding a comprehensive and successful charitable gift and estate planning program. The individual will assist in planning, organizing, and implementing strategies to increase the level of personal involvement and financial commitment of donors and prospects of Miami University. In addition, this position will have a set of metrics corresponding to strategies seeking philanthropic and volunteer support of alumni and friends of Miami.

Miami University is a public university founded in 1809 with 20,000 students enrolled in over 120 areas of study. With its close proximity to the city of Cincinnati coupled with its nationally recognized excellence in undergraduate education there is a significant opportunity to increase all measures of support through Gift Planning. With the launch of the public phase of Miami’s For Love, For Honor, For Those Who Will comprehensive campaign in October 2022, a robust and high functioning Gift Planning team will play a critical role in its success.

Summary: To identify, cultivate, solicit, and steward alumni and friends of Miami University, specifically those who make Planned Gifts, and to lead the Gift Planning team of major gift officers.

Duties/Physical Demands:          

  • Supervises the work of the gift planning office to include major gift officers and other staff. Responsible for goal setting and monitoring productivity. Conducts annual performance evaluations.
  • Identifies, cultivates, and solicits prospects for planned gifts to Miami University.
  • Responsible for training and educating gift officers on estate gift procedures.
  • Serves as the point of contact for Advancement on complex gift planning vehicles.
  • Coordinates with Prospect Development and other University Advancement Offices to identify prospective donors.
  • In collaboration with University Advancement leadership, creates and maintains Miami University’s Gift Acceptance Policies.
  • In coordination with the Miami University Foundation Chief Financial Officer, oversee the administration of the charitable trust, pooled income fund, and gift annuities.
  • Collaborates with Donor Relations to ensure continual stewardship of planned gift donors
  • Facilitate and monitor the estate resolution process.
  • Oversees the development and execution of the gift planning marketing efforts.
  • Performs other duties related to the mission of the Office of Development and assigned by the Senior Associate Vice President of Development, Central Programs.

Minimum Qualifications:            

  • Bachelor's degree
  • Eight or more years of relevant experience including fundraising, sales, corporate engagement, and/or legal or financial services
  • Proven track record in strategically working with high-net-worth individuals

Desired Qualifications:

  • Advanced degree
  • JD or CPA degree
  • Certification in financial planning
  • Experience in a legal or financial services environment
  • Experience in higher education
  • Experience working with faculty
  • Direct fundraising experience in an educational setting
  • Experience working with a donor database system

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities 

  • Outstanding oral and written communication skills
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Demonstrated level of leadership and management
  • Willingness to travel extensively on both a regional and national level
